Learn to Keep Bees
Need a nudge? Give it a go! You can do it... there are other courses out there, but none with this much practical experience and guidance for the $.
This course is certified by the BC Honey Producers Association (BCHPA) providing students with the knowledge and skills to be successful as a beekeeper. It is organized over a calendar year to address the needs of beekeepers and their honeybee colonies, which change as the year rolls along. The full course graduates will receive BCHPA certificates and hands-on experience. Course work will be done at the homes of students, and also at the Honeybee Haven apiary 26214 - 26 Ave, Aldergrove.
Dates are approximate to be verified as students need...
Week 1 Jan 21 - overview, beekeeping costs, legal requirements, protective gear, equipment, tools, info sources, bee anatomy, stings, BCHPA, honeybee packages vs nuc orders considered
Week 2 Feb 4 - apiary placement, honeybee castes, lifecycle, identifying brood, population dynamics, nucs, packages, feeding, order packages or nucs.
Week 3 early March (TBA ) in apiary …receive packages, demo. install packages, feeding
Week 4 April 13 - in apiary - 9am to noon - Queen replacement, combining hives, swarms - prevention, capture, handling, splitting, honey flow, adding supers
Week 5 May 11 - in apiary - 9 am to noon - receiving nucs, pests - Bee Act, disease, responsibilities, treatments
Week 6 June 22 - in apiary - 9 am to noon - honey, composition crystallization, fermentation, harvesting, extraction, hive products.
Week 7 Aug 24 - in apiary - 9 am to noon - winter management, equipment storage, oxalic acid, overwinter hive prep
Week 8 Sept 22 - in apiary - 9 am to noon - oxalic acid, winter hive check procedures, final quiz.
$240.
The course is taught in 8 sessions over a 10 month period. Locations will depend on where students live. We could convene at your kitchen table and talk bees , and then move outdoors to check out the hands-on hive experience. Week 1 and week 6 will take place at honey bee haven apiary in Aldergrove. Interest has also been expressed so far by students in Richmond, Langley and Vancouver, so we will likely convene there too, depending on commitment.
