Sponsorships (LEPS) for the colonies are available every spring. Please contact LEPS to secure your colony. Currently a sponsorship to host a honey bee colony and enhance the local environment in your neighbourhood is $1300 per colony. It provides for year round maintenance of the bee colony and regular inspections by me, fully insured Master Beekeeper Bryn Jones, while the colony is on your property, honey harvesting, honey bottling, disease monitoring as well as answers to any bee questions!
In order to confirm a colony for your yard, please donate your $1300 to LEPS by February 1, 2024 at the latest, and include your name, address, phone and email details, along with an indication that your donation is intended for a honey bee hive sponsorship. It should be sent to [email protected]. along with all your contact info along with an indication that this donation is intended to sponsor a honey bee colony. I will be notified of your donation and be able to place an order for a colony if needed, and ensure one has your name on it for the coming season.
Colonies are placed on a participating host's property following municipal and provincial regulations regarding bee colony installation. These largely focus on directing the flight path of the bees. The hives will be installed in May and be removed starting at the beginning of September. Over the winter, our bees' survival improves if they conserve heat, which is enabled by grouping colonies in groups of four, huddled together, under insulation in Aldergrove.
You should know that LEPS is a fully government accredited and registered charity . Donors will receive a charitable donation income tax receipt, and the knowledge that hosting their beehive is helping their local environment.
Bi-weekly inspections of the hives assure sponsor hosts that any colony diseases are dealt with promptly and replaced where needed. I will be responsible for the colony and these inspections assure sponsors that any problems may be proactively dealt with. Signs may be posted to warn inquisitive visitors to keep clear of potential stinging risks.
